Hyundai tucson: new mild hybrid

Hyundai also converts the small diesel in the tucson to mild hybrid. The new electric part of the drive is identical to the one in the two-liter diesel we recently had here in the editorial office. A belt-driven 48-volt starter generator contributes a maximum of 12 kw and 55 nm of torque. The system output remains unchanged at 85 and 100 kw. The lithium-ion polymer battery has a capacity of 0.44 kwh. The aim here is not to drive purely electrically, but to support the combustion engine and reduce consumption by shifting the load point.

Not a subtle move

Like many other manufacturers, hyundai converts the wltp to the previous nedc. This is not a good move on the part of the industry, because the consumer continues to be led to believe that the values are lower than those determined in the new cycle. There are considerable differences between the two. In the converted nedc, hyundai promises 117 grams of co2 per kilometer for both diesels, compared with 132 grams previously. In wltp the differences are considerably smaller. For the 85 kw diesel, the reduction is from 157 to 149 grams, while for the 100 kw version it is now 157 instead of 165 grams of co2 per kilometer.

In liters per 100 kilometers, the wltp figures are now 5.6 (85 kw) and 5.9 liters (100 kw) instead of 5.9 and 6.2 previously. The figures extrapolated from the nedc sound friendlier, as consumption is said to have dropped from 5 to 4.4 liters. The saving is nevertheless quite manageable. That’s in line with what our january 2019 road trip revealed: even the two-liter diesel doesn’t get appreciably more economical with the mild hybrid add-on.

All tucson diesels have an scr catalytic converter and a 14-liter gross urea supply. They are homologated in the euro 6d-temp emission standard and are thus ready for first registration by the end of next year. So there will be an update here in the fall of 2020 at the latest, which will then presumably only raise the urea dosage a little – if at all, because like many other current cars with diesel engines, the tucson is presumably also under the 120 mg.

Prices have risen sharply within a year. In the july 2018 price list, the tucson with the base diesel costs at least 25.520, with 100 kw it was a minimum of 26.720 euros, now hyundai demands for the comparable models 26.470 and 27.670 euros. The gasoline engines became in the same period maximally 100 euro more expensive.
