For years suvs have been the biggest sellers for car manufacturers, the trend is towards smaller and smaller models with less and less technology. Off-road capability has long ceased to be an ie and, in contrast to their martial appearance, many compact suv models no longer even offer the option of all-wheel drive. Contrary to this trend, the ford ecosport, which has been on sale in europe since 2012, will now be available with all-wheel drive for the first time following its model update.
But this is not the only way in which ford is trying to upgrade the four-meter low-cost model, which was originally intended as an offering for third-world countries, to the point where it can compete with rivals such as the new seat arona in europe.
The all-wheel drive system will initially be offered with a 125 hp, 300 nm 1.5-liter diesel in conjunction with a six-speed manual transmission. Thanks to an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, it delivers up to 50 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. From mid-2018, the 1.5-liter self-destroyer will then be available with front-wheel drive.
Gasoline engines only as three-cylinder units
A 100-hp version of the diesel is available as an entry-level engine, while ford offers its ecoboost three-cylinder gasoline engines with 125 and 140 hp, the 125-hp version also with a six-speed automatic transmission. The 100-horsepower version of the three-cylinder engine will arrive in mid-2018, while the 1.5-liter gasoline engine with four cylinders and 112 horsepower will be dropped.
According to ford, the small ecosport receives further technical upgrades through suspension and driving dynamics tuning to european tastes. This is achieved by adjusted spring and damper rates and a change in the steering ratio. The assistance systems were extended by cruise control, blind spot warning and jerk driving camera.
The modernized ecosport models are now recognizable by a stronger resemblance to the ford kuga. The quirky detail of a spare wheel mounted on the outside is still available, at least on order. The interior has new seats, the cockpit has been redesigned along the lines of the new fiesta. So it also gets the chunky, free-standing eight-inch monitor and ford sync 3 voice-controlled communications and entertainment system, including apple carplay and android auto, and optional bo sound system with 675 watts.
Ford will unveil the ecosport at the iaa in frankfurt (14. To 24. September 2017). Ford will start taking orders "at the end of the year". The price could be expected above the 19.390 euros, which the ecosport with the 125-horsepower gasoline engine currently costs. The more favorable entry-level model is currently still priced at 17.990 euros.
