Tried canon’s gps receiver gp-e2 (from 236,89 €) on a two-week trip through canada. He occupies the camera’s hot shoe and was ready for use in a few seconds. So we were not forced to permanently turn it on during a hike. But whoever does this, do not have to worry about our experience: in our practice test, the mignonzelle considered a week for a week – which translates more than 30 hours.
The compact gps receiver is plugged into the hot shoe of a canon-compatible eos camera and ensures that the gps coordinates are written to the exif matadata of the image files. To set the gp-e2 is not necessarily the supplied program map utility of notes. The basic functions can also be adjusted via the camera name.
With active gp-e2, it writes camera the gps coordinates into the respective image file or in their exif metadata. Thus, each photo automatically contains the geoinformation and thanks to the built-in compass also the photographing direction. This is practical because in this way the subsequent adjustment of a track recorded with a gps tracker remotes. This saves one operation.
Very convenient is the quick release, the canon photographers also know from the flash. Through the rubber protection here is also a slight splash protection. Under the rubber cap lies the mini-usb connection for connection to the computer or to the canon eos 7d. Only the 7d requires a cable connection, the data exchange with the other cameras takes place via the hot shoe.
The gp-e2 has two modes: the first is the probably most used mode, which – as described – writes the gps coordinates into the image file. Number two mode is a log function: it makes nothing else than to record the movement data – just like a normal gps tracker.
The controls are simple and logical: a switch for the two operating modes log and direct writing of gps coordinates in the pictures. Two leds show the state of charge of the battery and the gps signer catch.
About the supplied software map utility (and only about it) the log file is read out and can be adjusted either with pictures or exported as kml file.
The canon program map utility is very simple and offers in addition to the configuration of the gps receiver, the display of information about the host site (see illustration).
Two led displays show the state of the battery and gps reception by flashing. There is also a gps display on the display on the camera. Very good is the quick locking, as you already know from the flash. This saves turning on a wheel for fixation. To the professional claim also fits the rubber seal, which gives a splash protection between camera and gps receiver.
The second main function is importing gps log files from the gps receiver. These gps log files can be used for export to google earth or the link with images that have no gps coordinates yet. For example, because they were made with another camera.
A mini usb port is for the transmission of the log data to the computer, for setting the log interval or for connection to the eos 7d. Although the eos 7d is closely linked to the gp-e2, but no connection can be connected via the hot shoe and must instead use a usb cable. A short and a long cable are included in the scope of delivery. Unfortunately, these are not in favor of connecting to the calculator as they only have a mini usb. Unless the own calculator has this rather rare connection.
The gps receiver has almost completely convinced us: in just a few fallen, he could not find contact with the gps satellite, then became a coordinate "0" registered. In about 4000 pictures, this occurred only four times, it is clear that the gps reception only works only with visual contact in the sky, there is therefore no gps reception in buildings.
The geographic information is reliably written in the exif metadata of the files for both jpeg and raw. None of the programs we used to reading had problems. So we were reliable, for example, with adobe photoshop lightroom, houdahgeo, mytracks and the osx preview to access the data. Even if the price of around 240 euros is detrimental: for photographers that use this feature regularly, the gps receiver is a meaningful output.
